When your teeth are crooked, it can have a serious impact on the quality of your smile, and your confidence. Not only that, but crooked teeth can also lead to a variety of oral health complications, including cavities and gum disease. You may also experience severe jaw pain as misaligned teeth place uneven and excessive pressure on the jaw and temporomandibular joints. Correcting misaligned teeth can greatly improve your oral health, your smile and your confidence. Traditionally, this type of correction meant metal braces. At Jeremy J Burke, DDS, PA, we offer an alternative, Invisalign®.
Traditional Treatment for Misalignment
Metal braces have been used for several decades to correct the alignment of both the teeth and the jaws. It is highly effective and still a popular treatment choice today. Traditional braces consist of three basic components, brackets, bands and archwires. The archwires perform the majority of the work. They are anchored at the back of the mouth by the bands and attach to each tooth at the bracket with an elastic O-ring. These wires are responsible for the movement and stabilization of your teeth. While effective, there are many patients, particularly older teens and adults, who do not want metal braces. The visibility of the braces can decrease confidence.
Invisalign® provides an alternative to traditional metal braces. Treatment involves the use of clear, rigid plastic aligners. We create aligners specifically for you based on impressions of your mouth. The aligners are worn over the teeth and can be removed at any time. However, for you to achieve the best possible results, it is recommended that they remain on your teeth for at least 20 to 22 hours each day. They should only be removed to eat or to brush your teeth and should be replaced immediately afterward. Once in place, they disappear, rendering them invisible to anyone around you.
How Invisalign® Works
Treatment with Invisalign® involves the use of several sets of aligners. Depending upon your treatment, you may go through 18 to 30 sets. Each set, which is slightly different from the one before it, is worn for two weeks before moving on to the next set. The gradual changes in the aligners are done to move your teeth into proper alignment. Instead of metal wires, the plastic moves your teeth. Much like wires, the plastic places pressure on the teeth, which puts pressure on the ligaments holding your teeth in place. The ligaments widen, and the teeth are free to move. Once proper alignment has been achieved, the aligners hold the teeth in place until the ligaments, and the jawbone, begin to heal. After your treatment is complete, we will provide you with a retainer, which will help you to maintain the results and prevent the teeth from shifting back out of alignment.
