Cleanings and Exams
The American Dental Association, or ADA, recommends that you brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once a day at home. These daily habits are integral components of maintaining optimal oral health. However, while crucial, these steps are only a part of the equation. It is also important to have twice-yearly professional dental visits. At Jeremy J Burke, DDS, PA, we take the health of your mouth very seriously. In our office, we provide you with the cleanings and exams you need to prevent serious issues from occurring and keep your mouth happy and healthy.
Even if you brush and floss your teeth every day at home, these habits are not enough to prevent oral health issues from occurring. Some areas of your mouth are harder to access than others, and these areas may go untouched. This gives plaque and bacteria an opportunity to grow and cause problems like cavities and gum disease. You may think that you are doing a good job keeping your mouth clean, but the earliest warning signs of these issues are hard to detect and tend to go unnoticed. In fact, cavities and gum disease are not often noticed by you until they have progressed into more serious issues. When this happens, more invasive treatments become necessary.
At Jeremy J. Burke DDS PA, we can give your teeth a thorough cleaning. We can reach all areas of your mouth, including the ones that you may consistently, even unknowingly, miss. It is recommended that you have these cleanings done at least twice a year. Your cleaning begins with a thorough scraping of all surfaces of your teeth, including around the gumline. We take the time necessary to remove even the most stubborn plaque and bacteria, ensuring that the surfaces of your teeth are smooth and contaminant free. Next, your teeth are polished using an electric handpiece with a rotating head and a special dental polish. The polish helps to leave your teeth with a beautiful shine. After polishing, we floss your teeth, removing any remaining debris, including that which may have collected during your cleaning. If necessary, we can also provide you with a fluoride treatment.
Exams are also recommended at least twice a year and are usually done in the same visit as your cleanings. Your exam is designed to allow us to assess the condition of your mouth and check for early warning signs of issues such as tooth decay, gum disease and more.
After your teeth have been cleaned, we will then begin your oral exam. We start with a visual inspection of the internal structures of the mouth. We check your teeth for signs of decay, chips, and fractures. Your gums are checked for signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, and gum recession. The condition of any sealants, fillings, and dental restorations will also be examined to make sure that they are not damaged or malfunctioning. Some, not all, of your exams will include digital x-rays, which will enable us to see the condition of your mouth below the gumline, including structures like the roots of your teeth and the jawbone. We can monitor the development of teeth, assess impaction, monitor bone loss, and diagnose a variety of different issues. After we have looked at your mouth, we will then have a discussion with you regarding your oral care routine and oral habits. We can provide you with tips to improve your oral care and answer any questions that you may have.
Cleanings and exams, in conjunction with your daily home care routine, help you to maintain optimal oral health. If it is time for your dental cleaning and exam, call Jeremy J Burke, DDS, PA today at (432) 653-2320.
