How Much Toothpaste is Enough Toothpaste?

Toothbrush Jeremy J Burke, DDS, PA TX 79761-4232Most people brush their teeth at least twice a day, and some even do so after each meal, but how much toothpaste is enough toothpaste?

Many of us see toothpaste as an essential oral health item, however, it may surprise you to find out the only benefit of toothpaste is that it refreshes your mouth and helps to cover offending odors that develop after eating certain foods.

The toothbrush is what does the cleaning and using too much toothpaste can be detrimental to your oral health by eroding the enamel. As a matter of fact, the abrasive properties of toothpastes can increase the incidences of tooth loss and gum recession.

Should You Fill Your Toothbrush with Toothpaste?

Manufacturers are trying to sell you a lot of toothpaste, but a regular size tub should last you for a long time.

As opposed to what commercials show you, you don't need to fill the toothbrush with toothpaste. Remember, the toothbrush is what cleans the teeth.

How Much Toothpaste is Enough?

You only need a pea size amount of toothpaste to do the job. With the moisture in your mouth there is no need to get the toothbrush wet and having too much foam in your mouth will make you stop and spit more often, which could lead to less brushing time. We recommend you spend two-minutes brushing your teeth.

Should Your Toothpaste Have Fluoride?

Fluoride is necessary to protect the enamel and it's also antibacterial, but too much of it could also cause problems for someone with gum recession or exposed roots. Another option is a mouthwash with fluoride.
